PuriKura Photo Booth

Project Overview

Purikura are the sticker-photo booths of Japanese arcades. For JAIF’s 20th anniversary exhibition at Plaza Senayan, we built one around JABOT, the event mascot: guests step up to a tall touchscreen, JABOT and friends join them live on screen, and a few minutes later they walk away with a framed print and their photos on their phone.

The Brief

  • Three days of walk-up guests: families, students, office crowds. It has to explain itself.
  • JABOT can’t just be pasted on top. It should feel like it is in the photo with you.
  • A print for every visit, without staff fighting a print dialog.
  • Run all day on a compact mini PC, not a gaming rig.

Our Scope

  • The booth app: camera, live AR, the six-shot flow, frames, stop-motion video and the print queue.
  • A print agent on the reception laptop that prints each job silently.
  • The web version at purikura.aseanjapan.org, for anyone not at the mall.

01At the Booth

From Tap to Print

Four screens, about two minutes. Recorded from the booth software itself.

  1. 01

    Choose a frame

Four frame designs, each previewed with a different JABOT line-up.

  2. 02

    Smile, six times

A countdown, a flash, and the shot drops into the strip. JABOT, leaves and cheek flags follow every face live.

  3. 03

    Pick four

Tap the four best. The order you tap is the order they print.

  4. 04

    Print and save

One tap sends the framed print to the queue; the QR code opens your photos and video.

02The Print

Straight Out of the Booth

Four shots in a 4R frame, made by the booth and printed at the reception desk while the guest walks over.

03Two Ways to Play

Booth and Browser

The same JABOT, built twice: once for a kiosk in a mall, once for any phone.

The Booth

Kiosk · Electron

A full session in one run: frame, six shots with JABOT, pick four, then print and QR. It runs as a locked-down kiosk app, returns home on its own when a guest walks away, and keeps a local backup of every session.

  • Six shots, four printed
  • Stop-motion video of the session
  • Back to home when idle
One full session, start to finish

The Web Version

Phone browser

For everyone who couldn’t make it to Plaza Senayan. Open the link, grow a leaf on your head, swap in the ribbon “Threads” or an ASEAN JABOT, and tap to change country - the flag on your cheek changes with it.

  • Three AR modes
  • Tap to change country
  • No app to install

04After the Shot

Photos That Find Their Way Home

Every session uploads in the background: the QR opens a personal download page, and the team sees every session in an admin view.

05Under the Hood

Built for a Mall, Not a Lab

A booth runs all day, with strangers, on modest hardware. These are the parts that made that work.

  • JABOT peeks out from behind you

The camera cuts each guest out of the background, so JABOT and Kibot can sit behind people while leaves and flags sit on top - the same trick as a filter’s “ghost behind you”.

  • Every face, tracked

Head and face tracking puts a leaf on every head and flags on every pair of cheeks, one ASEAN and one country, even with a family squeezed in.

  • Light enough for a mini PC

The live view draws in plain 2D, no 3D engine, and the video is stitched from the shots as stop motion. Smooth on an office-grade mini PC.

  • Printing without a dialog

The booth queues each framed print; a small agent on the reception laptop pulls it over the event hotspot and prints silently. If the network drops, jobs wait and print when it’s back.

Let's Build The Engine

Bring the idea, or just the problem. We'll shape the experience and build the engine behind it.
